Main direction: transportation of pollutants in watershed ecosystems and their impacts on water quality. Research interests include: source identification of diffuse pollution, its prevention with ecological engineering; the ecological structures and functions of the land/water ecotones, the mass cycling in the ecotones and wetlands; mechanism, assessment and control of lake eutrophication. The research achievements were awarded the Biwasko Prize in Japan (1995), Ibaaki and Kasumigaura Prize in Denmark (1999).
