The biological reactors for wastewater treatment have long been dealt with as a black box, and their design has been mainly based on experiences. On the other hand, although many biological wastewater treatment processes have been developed and applied, bacteria have remained to be the dominating microbes responsible for organic degradation. In order to realize the bioreactors from the microbial aspects, microbial community analysis in bioreactors is conducted using some molecular biological techniques such as quinone analysis, FISH, PCR-DGGE, 16S rDNA gene clone and sequence analysis. Such information will be useful for the proper design and operation of wastewater treatment bioreactors. In order to topple some tough environmental problems, we focus on finding and utilizing the environmental functions (biodegradation and biosorption) of fungal microbes. Fungi including yeast and mold are employed for treating wastewater and their applicability is under investigation.
